Over the last few weeks, Feed Ontario joined with Banques alimentaires Canada and food banks across the country in calling on all federal parties to prioritize food insecurity in their platforms.
As we outlined in our op-ed “Food security is national security,” this issue goes beyond moral obligation – it is essential to the health and security of our communities and our country.
With over 1 million Ontarians turning to food banks to make ends meet, we need both a strong economy and a strong social safety net – one that ensures if job losses or the unexpected happens, families can stay on their feet.
As we look to the future, we congratulate all newly elected Members of Parliament and call upon them to take bold action against food insecurity and poverty. This means ensuring that Canada’s 45th Parliament prioritizes permanent Employment Insurance (EI) reform, access to quality employment, social supports that complement provincial programs, and significant investments in affordable housing.
Let’s work together to build a Canada that does not include hunger.
