Food bank to fork
How donated food moves through our network
Large-scale donations of shelf stable or fresh and frozen foods are an important way Feed Ontario helps keep food bank shelves full. Learn about how food donations move through our network to help ensure everyone in Ontario has access to healthy and nutritious food.
What food banks need the most
Feed Ontario recommends donating items you like to see in your own household including fresh food and pantry items. See a few of our suggestions below!
Grains
Cereal, rice, pasta, oats, granola bars, and flour
Proteins
Canned fish and meat, fresh meat and poultry, eggs, beans and legumes, and peanut butter
Fruit and vegetables
Fresh and canned fruits and vegetables, and children's snacks
Special diet foods
Diet-specific food (e.g. low-sugar, gluten-free, dairy-free, etc.), culturally appropriate food (e.g. halal, kosher, etc.), vegan and vegetarian options
Pantry staples
Soup, pasta sauce, stews, chili, and prepared meals
Household and hygiene items
Toilet paper, cleaning products, toothpaste, deodorant, tampons, etc.
Farmer Tax Credit Bill (Bill 36)
Ontario farmers who donate to local food banks and community meal programs are eligible to receive a 25% tax credit based on the fair market value of the donated product! Feed Ontario worked with the agricultural community and MPP Bob Bailey (Sarnia-Lambton) to gain support on this initiative, which was passed in 2013 with all-party support. Ontario is the first province in Canada to offer this tax credit.
